The same thing is happening to me. I have all the files in the search folder CHMOD 777 just to make sure, I even did what was suggested: to 777 the folder itself and it didn't help, I still get this error.
Ahhh, bummer - hate to say me too, "ME TOO". There, I said it. So is there an answer to this, other than go find another search script that works or what? I also get the same "Database State = Not Writable, CHMOD "site.dat"!
At first I thought maybe I should rename the site.dat file to be site .txt as the read me stated, well that did not work either.

OK i played around with this search engine and found out why the site.dat was not writeable.
if you change this line $root = "/home/www/your/root/search"; to
$root=realpath ( "./search"); you will get a real nice error telling you where your root of the folder is....copy that line when you run the error code with the slashes to your config file using note pad. then save your config file.
Also make sure site.dat is writable 777 you can use windows ftp to do this btw the instructions say to use an ftp client but windows ftp does the exact same thing as far as i am concerened unless you want to change to ascii or something heh...777 btw is read write and execute.

Maybe I wasn't clear: It works! (after I put the path right) Just the trick to set $root=realpath ( "./search"); didn't produce an error, maybe I shoud have changed it to ( "/search") since windows doesn't understand the "." but anyway an error for a not existing directory would help too but none was given.

Till now i have tryed your Web2mail script and i very sadistfyed. The option that the WebSearch script gives already do sadistfy me, but...i don`t know why the site.dat is still not writable and i know i have configured the config.php as it should be /home/www/johnstefon/htdocs/search i have CHMOD the site.dat to 777 but it pisses me off couse i really like the options that your script is offering me but i can`t use it. I am dealing to find the scripts problem by myself for a week, looks like i am not smart enough so i decided to contact your webforum and get some help from you, and if even this wont help me till the end of this week i will just simply give up and try to search a new script. Hope to get some support from you as soon as possible. P.S. i tryed even the options that u gave as answer to the other users on the forum, neither that helped me. I CHMOD even the whole directory to 777 but than it didnt even showed me the pages anyway, hope to hear soon.
The problem seems to be that your PHP webhost does not support file writing. Either change hosts or use PHP/MySQL search instead. If that is not the case the only other thing I can think of is that your php version does not support the function "is_writable" - either way, ask your webhost whats going on.
