I was hoping that someone could help me choose a domain name for my site.

My site is called: Michael's site
My name is: Michael Lutaaya

If you're creative unlike me, please help me find that perfect domain.

Is the site going to be a personal website where you basically have information about you, and other things like that? Or will it be an interactive site with things available? Or will it be a site with registration available and member only features? Or will it be a business?

All this affects what domain name you use. If its one that will be popular or business-like, you want a name that will stick Wink

The best thing to do it put together a short list of ideas you have had for the name, and then we can comment and try and improve them maybe?

For me it was easy, GodfatherUK.Com can be used for all of the above questions.. It just so happenes at the moment that its one about me that im wrking on

well , if its just a personal web-page , ive noticed that some will actually try to get their domain to be their first and last name.

like : michaelcasanova.com

this will hit search engines hard when someone ever does a search for your first and last name as it becomes a top keyword result when combined with the meta-keywords associated with your name as well.
so it hits the first page in most cases when this approach is used.

also , if your first and last name are already taken , try to not use their suggested domains like .... michaelcasanova423.com , numbers in an address like that or scattered letters will throw your rankings off.

well you could just do centre.com, you make it a generic name.

that way if the site you have now taps out you can still use the domain without it looking really odd.

i actually might do that one day myself for my other site Wink

It's to bad that centre.com is taken, maybe I can buy it off the holder.

Does anyone know of anyone good guides for self-hosting.

thought you already self-hosted , as i recall a post you mentioned the Apache web-server in a previous post.

self hosting is rather easy , ive done it for several years now.

Requirements:
suggested simple-
*DSL line
*Apache
*PHP
*PERL
*MySQL

this will only run a web-site , in order to do more , then you really need more DSL lines.
so if you want to host FTP then you really should get another DSL line as well as if you want to offer free e-mail. in real in-depth reading that i have done , ive come to the final conclusion that for each service you wish to offer , you should use another DSL line.
To offer all services , its highly suggested to have a total of 4 DSL lines.
DSL Line 1->HTTP (Web)
DSL Line 2->SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol,eg:E-Mail)
DSL Line 3->FTP (File TRansfer Protocol
DSL Line 4->HTTPS (SSL,eg:Secure Sockets Layer)

Each DSL Line is capable of serving a total of 30 simultaneous requests

BY all rights , you never actually NEED a Domain name.theres several things to consider.
In reality , all Domain names resolve back to an IP# , howerver , the www.myaddress just looks prettier , yet is actually considered unsafe.
ANY WWW.address can be ARP HIJACKED !
The first and foremost web-site to have experienced ARP Hijacking was www.yahoo.com Wink

if you search deep enough on the web , you'll eventually come to a tutorial exposing how it was done . The hacker was explaining how easy it was to do and was explaining that how a web-site was actually safer to only use their IP# instead , since an IP# doesnt experince the holes associated with ARP poisioning.

Any WWW.address can also be hit with an ARP-high-jack and never even know it...... a simple hacker would do a tiny poisioning in order to steal traffic associated with particualr www.addressess and recieve all your hits while never bothering the www.site owner .

theres an enormous amount of stuff to read in-depth on all of this stuff....

Thanks for all your help.

Self-hosting just isn't for me. All my local ISP's don't allow hosting of any kind (http, mail, etc..)
